Strange noise with mini lites....

Hi,

Just fitted the Mini superlites on the car, with spigot rings and wobble bolts. Everything seems to be in order until you start driving! There's an odd 'whump whump whump' noise which seems to get faster as the speed increases, so sounds like it should be a wheel issue? Someone said that something might be rubbing, but we can't seem to figure out where this might be happening as there are no score lines or marks on the wheels.

Can any one shed some light on this or have any ideas? Hoping to take it to plymfest tomorrow and would be great if the mini lites were on it!

Cheers
Chris

Are you sure theres no scrape? Theres definitely no weights rubbing on the caliper?

Sometimes the calipers need to have a bit shaved off or spacers are needed.

Have you put your old wheels back on to see if it still does it? Just asking as you may have a warped disc? Jack it up with a wheel off and see if it spins true if it still makes the noise with the old wheels.

Have you got bigger braked fitted? I found the balancing weights on my alloys were rubbing against the calipers!!!

no def not the weight blocks, im 110% sure its not them.

think it could be a wheel bearing?!

If you tried the old wheels back on and it went away you would single it out to be the wheels. Check for play during swapping them over

its always had a faint running noice but just knocked it off for being a 20year old car but with the wide mini's on it has seemed to make it louder. but when turning a corner it goes quite on way and not the other.

is that not wheel bearing tail tail nackered noice?

Do the pads rub?? if you jack up the car does the wheel spin freely? if not does the wheel spin freely if the calipers are unbolted from the carriers? If a bearing is tired you sometimes get some movement when the car is jacked up and the top and bottom of the wheel is rocked.

i would 100% say its the wheel bearing just from this exactly what my old r5 turbo was like plus several over cars over the last 15+ years but i would also try the other wheels just incase plus its free to change the wheels when changing them look right over for any marks ect

if it aint broke dont fix it but betters allways better

It could be loads of things.  Are you certain the tires aren't catching the struts a bit?  Back plates rubbing on the discs?  Is it really low, and the drive shaft is catching the chassis?
