sticking in gear

Hi everyone

i hope someone can help me out

my 1986 mk1 citi  sticks in gear every so often, its really annoying and scary when flying at a corner expecting to drop into second

it happens alot if im in slow moving traffic, if i am accellerating it is fine, but if i let it roll in gear with the clutch depressed after a few meters i almost cant get it out of gear.
clutch in and out e few times doesnt help either. clutch is properly adjusted and the bulkhead is still perfect so that rules that out.

car is going for service this evening, it would be nice to be able to tell them what to look for.

thanks in advance
Dyl.

Um, now this is going to sound a bit mad, but I had this in my cabby a few years back. It was usually having dropped into second in slow moving traffic, roundabout/lights etc.

It would not shift out of gear for love nor money, and somehow I found by accident that if I opened the door and put my right foot on the ground and gently pushed the car back a few cm it would gently pop out of gear!

I don't think we ever did work out what was causing it. Had the gearbox changed eventually.

 :dontknow:

thanks debs!
Least i know im not going crazy :)

People follow too closely here to roll backwards in slow traffic.
Sounds kinda like when a 4x4 has been driven with difflock on road and everything winds up, i heard those guys saying u just roll the car back and its sorted.

Still odd.
I just keep taking it out of gear and back before it sticks

Anyone have any idea why it does this?

Sounds like the mainshaft bearings are seriously worn causing the gears to wind up against each other on the overrun, they would do that because they are helical cut and not straight cut so would exert a sideways force on the layshaft when accelerating/decelerating does it whine at all in fourth or fifth?

to be honest my exhaust is too loud to hear any wining :redfaced:
but i dont think it does, fourth gear was the first to start sticking into gear though…..

it is a second hand box, so i wouldnt be surprised if it is shot, best i start saving for a propper rebuild this time
