steering rack witch one ?

hi i have a mk1 1.1 and im changing it for a 1.8 8v i also have got gti calipers and hubs but found my steering rack is u.s so been looking around for a new one. i have seen there is a difference with the one on my car and the gti. is it much work to fit a gti rack or should i just fit a new one of whats already their. any help is greatly appreciated many thanks mike

You need the GTi casing as it has part of the gearchange required by your conversion.

yeha is right, i am doint the same swap and there is a mount welded to the 1.8 8v rack that is needed for the five speed box.

the racks themselves swap straight over.

take of the 1.1 rack and bolt on the 1.8  rack.

so the early cars have a different mounting?

Yes, bolt direct to body - no U clamps.

ok thanks mine has the u clamps so i need a gti rack for the gear linkage thats next on the long list of things to get. the joys of starting with nothing but a shell with a logbook lol. thanks for all your help clearing up this matter mike.

et to the ka recons the chassis break was:
Golf - F 178 3058 450>>
Scirocco - F 538 2009 474>>

and that the last one equipped with the early rack rolled off the production line in August 1977 for the Golf and September 1977 for the Scirocco
