Steering rack mounting
I've been trying to diagnose the vague steering on my '86 cabriolet and I think I've cracked it - I got my wife to wiggle the wheel whilst I was under the car and can see the rack moving (not much, but it moves) - one of the bushes looks pretty perished and I have just ordered poly bushes for the rack (thanks to a poster on this forum). The more worrying thing is that the bracket which holds the offside side of the rack to the bulkhead looks like it has been welded up in the past - badly! That also moves a bit when the wheel is turned… Question is - do I get what's there welded up some more or is there a replacement bracket I should be looking for….? Thanks all.

Hi
this was a common problem ! Your move to replace the rack bushes with poly items and new nyloc nuts ! Is a good idea , if the rack mount strap is welded , try VW or other parts suppliers for a new one before you tackle it . If its the body mount thats come away get it welded properly before assembly .
Don't forget the horn earth strap
