Steering Problems

Hi

having an issue with the steering on my 89 clipper, steering wheel is off centre and the play in the steering is awful, any ideas what it is and can i a novice undertake the task of fixing it???

ps had this issue since i bought car three years ago not flagged on MOT but i took it to a specialist in Paisley and he said it needed repaired

Sounds like something serious,get it checked out before you attempt driving it again.Get someone to rock the steering wheel from side to side whilst you look at the steering rack and components.Steering racks can break or break from their mountings,ball joints could have play present but from your description its more than just the joints.
