Steering Issues?

Hi,

Having been scouting everywhere and anywhere for a decent Cabriolet I finally seem to have found one in good condition, however I took it for a test drive and found that when turning the wheel it was sharp until about halfway round where it would suddenly become very stiff, it has got aftermarket wheels larger than the standard specs (which I intend to be rid of if I get it!) but just wondered if anybody else had heard of a problem like this (and if the alloys would have anything to do with it)

Cheers

NOt heard this one before. I don't suppose it could be the wheels unless they're rubbing and then again you'd hear this. All I can think of is the rack might be coming away, common problem and will need to be welded. If you look on the gearbox side you might just be able to see where its failed.

Others more technical might have a better idea but that's all I can think of mate.

Great cheers,

Is it a big job to do? Im more than likely going to go ahead with buying it anyway as the car has obviously been well looked after and garaged for a numerous amount of years, it only has 55000 on the clock also

Cheers

It could be that the rack has been adjusted and is now a bit tight. When they get a bit of wear if you adjust them in the straight ahead position they will sometimes bind when you turn, if you just slacken the adjuster a fraction it may cure it, it also may then rattle a little on rough ground. They're an awkward job to change but not the end of the world.
