steering issue

Does anybody know what could be the problem with my gti?  Every now and again i will be driving along, come to a bend, go to steer and it feels like the steering is almost locked up, then suddenly frees its self, the wheel moves sharply about 1/8th of a turn with no actual steering at the road wheels, then its fine again.

When driving again straight again the wheel sits in the right position, so its not like its slipping a tooth on the rack?

But when its stood still I cant recreate what happens - its quite disconcerting when it happens so need to get it sorted!!

Cheers

Could be play in the rack. I've heard there 's a way to sort this but never done it myself.

this was happening to me…evetually it go so bad i could freely move the steering wheel without any movement at the wheels. I had to have a complete new rack fitted as the gubbins (technical   ) had all collapsed and come apart.

Bit of a long shot but exactly the same symptoms happened to my 1970 Beetle.  The cause of that was someone had "installed" their own horn wire and rather than running it down the center of the column they'd run it down the side, so it kept getting twisted and caught every time you turned full lock.

As I said, long shot but might be worth a check to see that the horn grounding wire is free.

cheers guys, will have a flick through haynes to see if theres anything about adjusting rack, hopefully I can catch it before it falls to bits!  From memory when I had the stalks off the horn wire looked very original so I dont think its that.

Will get back to you when I get to the bottom of it
