Steering Column Top Bearing Question
Can anyone tell me whether or not by changing my steering lock housing it will also sort the top bearing problem? Is the top bearing in the steering lock housing already?
Hope this isn't TOO much of a stupid question, and if I'm wrong, where do I get a new top bearing for the steering column?
Cheers.

there is also a plastic bush between the column and bearing, its usually this that goes rather than the bearing in the ign lock housing. I packed mine out with tape in the mean time, but if you can let me know the age of the car I can get you a part number

my top bearing had been chiseled to close the gap - the person previously must have thought the bearing had worn over size on the shaft - but this is not how it works - there should be a little space around the column bearing
you will need the small plastic bush - this slips over the steering column and then the ignition unit is pushed on next and the small plastic bush locates the bearing on the shaft
the original bush will be completly knackered therefore allowing play in the steering column
its only pence from vw if i recall

Please can you post the part no for an 83 group. Mine is about shot so it'd be good to replace mine.

Ok I've seen in an older post that I need a different part number. Is this available through VW by any chance? Fingers crossed eh?!

92 rivage will use this one:
191 419 341 - 1.16+VAT
however since its a later car it will have the spline adaptor on it, which can be a bit of a mare to remove
worth trying to nip up the allen bolt that holds the lock housing to the outer column, this can sometimes work loose and give you this play. You should be able to access it thru a hole in the lock surround
