Starter motor queries??
I have a 1982 1.6 gti hard top, will the starter motor be specific to this engine or would a starter from another engine do the job I.e 1.8gti 1.3driver etc?

The starter motor is not the same from other big block engines (1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0) but its similar enough it will fit. Basically they just differ in power slightly. Also a Mk2 item will fit, but it will have an extra bracket/bolt hole which you don't need in the Mk1, doesn't do any harm though.

Ok thanks for that info, now does anyone know what bolts are used to secure it to the gearbox I thought they were just M8 bolts but found out yesterday as I went to put it on they were not!

I had a quick look in a 1.8 cab and they were Allen key headed bolts!?!?!

Yes, they're allen key headed bolts - or more accurately, female hex head. You'll never physically undo them with an allen key, but a set of adapters for a socket set is commonplace. There's loads of different styles of bolt head, for example Torx, security torx, 12 spline, etc they're basically used because they're more compact.

Would I be able to use normal m10 bolts, would that be enough to keep starter in place and not come free or are these other bolts easy to source and commonly available?
