Standard rear springs for a cabrio

The title says it all.  :D

Where/who sells standard ride height rear springs for a '90 cabrio?

The MoT inspector found a crack in a rear spring and all I can find on the web are tintop (too soft) or lowering kits but 'Skippy' is being kept original and I want it to stay that way.

I don't mind shelling out a few bob (and then some) for better progressive rate or anything top quality that will fit the bill just as long as they retain the original ride height.

Thanks

Tim

When wifes Sportline broke a rear spring the only place that we could get an original from was VW. At the time I wanted to replace all four springs. The fronts however are now obsolete, they did still have some rears though, but may be obsolete now as this was 18 months ago.

After much searching and deliberating we eventually settled on a H&R Cup kit, they are lowr than standard though. Shughy has a set on his as well.

You might be able to locate some at http://www.vw-classicp…content.pl?src=e_cp_index

Have a look at this thread for when Meenrod was looking.

I think that you are down to NOS searching.

As ade said above - I have the h&r cup kit too in my Sportline cab. Can't fault it. Love the stance of the car. Wheels sit well in the arches etc. Comfortable ride too.

Just complimented it with a h&r anti roll bar kit in the last month.

Cheers Hugh.

Hi,

Thanks to you guys I followed the URL trail and found the VAG part numbers:

2 violet for the rear (161 511 105 A) and 2 white for the front (171 411 105 J)

This refers to the correct spring rate for a late model cabrio

This might be useful, too: Illustrated Parts List

Finally, these guys provide OEM or 'same as quality' parts in Germany:

Shugy, if your'e in Paderborn, you should be able to find the spares if you quote the VAG part number.

Hi,

I don't want to get too excited but two VAG rear springs are on their way from Germany, they pretty much 'on the ball' with an online notification of the courier (UPS) pickup with tracking number etc.

Let's see what happens.

See the above post for details of the dealer http://www.teilesuche24.de/

And they didn't fit - too long and the wrong diameter, a total waste of £98

Luckily a firm in the West Midlands offer a bespoke spring service but the first stop is an H&R Cup kit. That will result in a 3 month old set of Jamex shocks being junked.

Thats not good Tim - can you send them back ?

If you do go for the H&R kit then be aware that the fronts are inserts and not full struts, you will need to use the ones on your car.

Ade

Unfortunately, the replacement rear springs have been modified- that's a problem.

However these guys Tested Spring- Oldbury have come through with a pair of rear springs made to the original spec- diameter 98mm length 345mm with some minor improvements for longer life.

Tested Spring charge just £40 per spring but their springs are shot-peaned which improves their resistance to metal fatigue and will even arrange to have your spring collected for copying - turn around is just two weeks.
