Squeeky squeek....

I think it's the suspension, but I'll ask anyway….

Basically, when I change gear and the body of the car 'pulls back' as it were, or if I go over a sharp speed hump and the car bounces a little, a loud squeeking  comes from the front of the car as it 'bobs' up and down. (A little like this: eeh-EEH-eeh lol). I'm thinking it's either something to do with the suspension or the engine mounts (but then I am pretty clueless). Can anyone suggest what it might actually be please? Hopefully it's something I can sort myself.

Sounds like engine mounts to me. Front one is easy, left and right are nightmares..

Use a rubber padded jack and carefully lift the engine a little close to each engine mount. Observe any severe play in the mounts while lifting, i.e. does the engine lift without without the chassis/body lifting.

They're fairly cheap aren't they? I'll see if I now anyone with a big enough rubber padded jack then lol. Thanks for that. Engine doesn't have to come out does it? Can I just spray them with silicone spray to stop it or do they need replacing so the engine doesn't fall out?!?

Hi,
It could be the downpipe, where it meets the manifold. I had this with my cabrio and it drove me insane. I changed the front engine mount and fitted one from a mk1 diesel (i heard they were tougher). All good with mine now.
Hope it helps.
Bez.

Thanks Bez. I'm all out of pennies this month (slightly over did it, oops!) but I'll get that done asap. So to change them then do I literally just jack the engine up near each mount? I'd be a bit worried about damaging it, where do I place the jack so as not to cause problems?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi,
I did one mount at a time and just supported engine with jack and wood blocks beneath sump. you shouldnt need to jack engine up as the bolt off and on in the same position.
