Springs vs Coilovers
I have budget issues and wanted to lower the stance of my new cabby. The wheels are quite nice so will keep them for now but the tyres are too big. The benefit of coilovers would be I could drop further at a later date i guess when I get new wheels or tyres.
I keep seeing cars bouncing up my road and I am not sure if this is the result of chossing springs not coilovers. Or am i wrong and the bouncing cars are just idiots who have chopped coils out of springs.

anyone who says different is just not being honest, because the min you say they handle better i will just throw track day in your face lol
overall the ride is alot harder and really frim compared to lowering springs also takes alot off body roll out the car, and compared to springs coilovers will make ur car bounce like a pogo stick becuase there so stiff, yes you can get some really good ones with rebound adjustment but lets face it your gonna spend that much on a set of coilovers for road use, you need ur head testing
but each to there own
but in coilovers defence just a spring kit will be just as bad becuase the preload sync will be all out of balance due to the shock being designed to run the standard spring hieght vw never designed the original shocks to have after market springs plummed on,
shock and spring kit is best bet or if you go on our advertisement section on here i do belive hot tunning offer a coilover kit posted to ur door at £165 which is bargain but then opens up the door on a harsh ride
like i side each to there own i'd rather shock and spring kit my self

I've run all my golfs on coilovers. I had 3 different kits on my 1st mk3, ending up with coilovers as I couldn't get the car sitting right ( it sat higher at passenger side than drivers?? )
Springs and matched shocks would be the only real alternative. springs on there own will ride awful, especially if they are the original shocks! Most kits have dampers with shortend bodies or similar.
The only problem I have encountered with my coils has been a clearance issue on the front. When I fitted my zenders the rear of the tyre was on the spring plate and the wheel locked solid! I'm now running stagered hubcentric spacers to solve the problem, which has also given the car a really nice stance overall!
I'm running the Hot tuning coils on my car, to be fair I can't complain about them, especially for the money!
This whole subject is a personal choice. If you can find anyone local with a dropped ride see if you can grab a trip out and see what you think….

I think I will run springs and standard shocks for now. 40 on rear and 60 on front, will invest in matched shocks when things are less tight.
