Spline adapter removal - how?!?

Hello,

I've spent all day trying to remove the spline adapter from my Clipper.

I placed a pair of mole grips behind the 'ridge' on the adapter and tried hitting them with a hammer. I then gave in and went and bought some 4" 2 legged pullers but I have had no luck with these and they in fact began to thread the column. I guess I should have bought the larger pullers.

Can I saw/grind off the adapter?  :banghead: Will a blow torch help?  :banghead:  :banghead:

I will certainly not be putting it back on, I just want it off.

I have had the same issue!  I want mine off so I can fit a 4 button wheel.  I have tried larger pullers and still it won't move. Can anyone help us?

I would grind a gap in both sides and try pullers again.
Take it you used pullers and they just slip off!

Take the wheel off and put the big nut back on a few turns, hit it with a big hammer the shaft will collapse then its off, then just loosen the bolts on the joint near the pedals and push it back up and tighten the nuts back up,that how i got mine off. :dontknow: not saying that its the right way just saying that it will work.or take a hack saw to it and split the saw mark.... :dontknow:

yup as above, though id put wood on the end too to stop the end beign damaged. the nut should stop the thread spreading but you still might damage the end of the column without the wood. you might have to really smack it!

Used bearing puller on mine.

Took some real cranking before it popped off.

Make sure the pullers aren't worn as it will just slip off the adaptor.

Borrowed one from a local garage and threw them a tenner.

3 leg puller required. You'd struggle with 2 leg pullers!

I had the pullers against a pair of mole grips that were gripped behind the lip thing on the adapter. I tried whaling it with a hammer but it hasn't moved as of yet. I removed the whole column to have a better look earlier, I'm going to prop it up against a wall tomorrow morning and properly smash it, then just admit defeat, throw it in the shed and buy one without an adapter attached.

All MK1 steering columns are the same aren't they? Just later models had that adapter attached?

I just bought one from eBay lol.

I tried hitting it again and no joy, though I did manage to break a slab lol. I even tried hack sawing it just after the toothed part in hope it would in some way help. It did not.

I gave my angle grinder to my mate with a rather rusty Uno Turbo, he needed it more than I lol.

Original spline is 17mm yeah? I've got hold of a old Mini wheel from my mate, I just need a boss for it. Will a cheap one from eBay such as this be OK?
