Speedo Stopped working

Anyone got any photos of what it should look like (gearbox end) if/when i get it apart
I have an 83 cabrio 1.8 with injection, 5 speed box and the little economy gauge above a working MFA (well was before the speedo stopped working) i understand there should be a red or yellow cog attached ? anyone know which and do you need any spacers, or adjustmnet on the cable ?
please let me knwo so I can get this sorted

oh yes, its decided not to tick over well now, if you rev it dies trying to get back to tickover, think this could just just be timiing out of adjustment though or tick over adjust screw has moved a little

all help appreciated
Jon

Go for the easy option first, adjust the tickover switch and see if this fixes the problem, it might have just slipped a little! Obviously you'll have to try it when cold and allow it to warm up to full temp and see if it retains the 1000rpm idle.

As for the speedo cable, I changed mine a little while ago, it's a reasonably easy job. Can't fathom why yours would fail suddenly though! If you get a replacemeny from GSF be aware you don't get the geared screw at the box end. If your's has fouled and needs replacing I'd go to VAG and order it all from there.

1000 rpm ?

its never ticked over that quick, even when I had it tunned it was only running at about 800/850, should it be ticking over quicker then ?
thanks for the adivce on the speedo

1,000 rpm is ideal, you'll a small marker either side of the 1,000rpm marker, this is your tolerance.

1 Week On

Many thanks for your help

Have turned the tickover adjustment screw on the  back of the inlet manifold in about 1/2 a turn, revs nice and smoth and 1000 exactly, with no excess decay when you release the pedal - running lovely

Speedo cable had broken about halfway along its length, new part was ?22 from GSF. Red worm drive sheath was still intact. Whole thing took about 20 mins to change, although it is difficult to lace through the engine bay (im now practised at removing the dash and instruments

So all is now well, including the new brakes which means it stops better now.

Infact this is a bit on a high point, since everything, and i mean everything , MFA, econometer, lights the whole lot now works on it

Many Thanks to everyone who has posted helped over the last couple of months
