sounds like a gun going off

when i hit a pothole or a bump in the road it makes this almighty noise also the handling is utter pants! im pretty sure my shocks are nackerd cos they are leaking but would this cause the bang and bad handling? i changed the springs to lowerd 40mm on to standard struts about 1000 miles ago, my friend (mechanic) helped and said they looked and worked fine. although i havent had the camber or toe in set properly because of noise incase it all need coming off again, but i dont think it is affecting handling this much surely!.

could the drop of damaged them? it pased mot straight after.

of am i barking up the wrong tree and should be checking bushes ect?

cheers tom

if you lower a car too much on springs with standard length shocks it wont take much too wreck them, they travel too far in the front strut and bottom out causing premature leaking, i take it they are inserts? also the top mounts will get wrecked as they take all the impact, those loud bangs you keep hearing is no damping from a shock just a spring for suspension!!!!!

ideally you need to match dampers and springs, if there is signs of leaking then they are knackered, you can get a nice Bilstein or Spax, Boge lowering kit for less than ?200 it all matched with shortened shocks and uprated springs or you can get the new Koni kits which are dearer but obviously higher end quality

check the topmounts for signs of wear and tear also check the gap, picture of a good un and bad un below for reference.

like you said dampers sound like they need replacing so go for a matched setup, ie all standard or all lowered.
