Some more alloy wheel advice needed

Post

I have an '84 Cabriolet GTi that I am trying to get ready for the forthcoming Hot Summer!!!

The car is fitted with BBS Alloys BBS 407 Lattice Effect (RZ?)

From what I can make out the part number is - 91601025AA

Sizing - 6 1/2J 15H2  ET33

The steering is very stiff and there is some evidence of contact between the tyre and the inner wheel arch

My guess is these wheels don't fit the car I have

Can anyone on the forum recommend a set of alloys that will cure the my problem - assuming that the problem of heavy steering is related to these wheels

Any help or advice will be much appreciated

That size shouldn't make the steering unduly heavy, what make/size tyres do you have, when I went from 175/70x13 tyres (unknown brand) on a 5 and1/2 inch rim et38, to a 195/50 on a 7x15 et35 rim my steering actually felt lighter. Saying that the unassisted mk1 steering isn't light compared to a modern assisted system.

They are Marshall 195/55 15

Appreciate that the car will be heavier than a modern day PAS system - but it borders on undriveable when parking or driving on//off ramps in the garage

Thanks for the advice

ET33 is within the range of oem offsets offered on the mk1, if anything its a little lower than the norm so they should sit further away from the inner arches! might be tyre size, as they're a bit too big. factory is 185/55 or 195/50. 195/55 is BMW size I think, a bit too baloony ;)

If fitting the correct tyres doesnt help I'd start with checking the camber, then the top mounts and also look at the steering rack adjustment. the haynes covers all the measurements, the brown one is awesome well worth getting off ebay!

Thanks RJ

I'll go down this "alternate" tyre route

I've a copy of the Brown Haynes on it's way

Judging by it's stance and wear pattern on the front tyres; some form of camber adjustment is required

But the super human strength required to steer means that something is amiss
