reverse light switch /mpg gauge

I have worked out that the large block reverse light switch on the gearbox is responsible for the change-up indicator but does it also make the economy/mpg needle work? or does that work off something else altogether?

Does anyone also know what re-wiring work is needed if your car currently has the small 2-connector reverse light switch fitted and you want to go back to the large block connector?

Yes - it switches in 5th gear enabling the guage

If you have an MFA dash liklyhood is either the box or dash has been swapped at some point.  If it's just the box then the dash and wiring are there and you need the correct box with the appropriate reverse light switch block i.e. 9A box

I know the box has been changed, not sure about the dash.

Does this mean there should be a big block connector hanging loose somewhere around the top of the gearbox if the loom is the original?

it could have been chopped off though, couldn't it?

There is a mini loom that connects to the gearbox block, reverse light wires and into the engine loom on the passenger side of the head

does it connect into the main engine loom by way of a thin sort of L-shaped connector that is not too far (6-8 inches) from the reverse light switch itself?

I had a quick look earlier before I read you're reply and that's how mine is currently

anyone who has a car with the large reverse light switch tell me if it is connected to the loom using that same thin plastic connector (that dirty bit in the background)

The connector for the econometer swtich is as shown below:



Item 31 is the swtich part located onto the gearbox housing. 35 & 36 are the connector and rubber housing.

I think this is different to yours.

The mini loom has three of the connectors in your pic - One for reverse, two go into the engine loom - there is also a connector at the dizzy end.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find any connectors resembling that now I know what I'm looking for.

Hopefully it and the wires will still be there, don't know what to do if not.
