Be your gear linkage bushes are worn at a guess. Ideally want to replace these, the linkage rods, relay lever (little metal lever and end of main shift rod with rubber ball on the end.) and also the bearing plate at bottom of gear stick.

The last one isn't always essential always but the others are a few pounds (dont buy off ebay!!) Quite an easy job to if you take it step at a time.

Try GSF for the parts Car Parts & Spares -- Buy Online with Fast UK Delivery | GSF Car Parts

If your linkage has recently been done then it will just need adjusting

when i put my new gearbox in i had a terrible problem of my gears being upside down. Whereas first was where 2nd should have been etc. Turned out it was the guide for the selector rod which was wrong. There are two types. One has the guide on the right hand of the bolts which connect the guide to the chassis and the other is on the left. Not sure if this helps but wouldn't want you to have the same problem i did.

Also it could be the spring in at the bottom of your gearstick. these do wear out as i have found out.

Hope this helps

If you do the bearing plate or spring at bottom of the gear stick make sure you buy a new circlip too as you can guarantee the old one wont hold once removed!
