reverse gear jumping

i recently got my 1.8 gti dx engine back from a re-bore and re-build job. however, reverse gear keeps jumping out with a horrible sounding noise, sounds like it's doing no end of damage…..firm who did the engine conversion reckoned it was a gear linkage problem, my usual mechanic thinks it's a synchromesh problem…before i go out buying re-coned gear boxes anyone got any idea which it could be?

also before anyone suggests i go back to the people who did the conversion, it was TSR so no longer anyone to get back to now.

cheers

Nick,

Reverse gear does not have a syncro!!

I'd make sure the linkage is set up correctly first before worrying about the box.  The engine fit should not affect the gears apart from removal and refitting of the box.

if i go and buy a gear linkage kit, how will i know if it is fitted right? does a new kit come with instructions or will ii need to get into a mechanic?

Nick,

probably just needs adjustment - and no the kits do not come with instructions!

there's a good page in the haynes manual about correctly adjusting the gear linkage

I presume your mechanic has checked the gearbox oil level :dontknow:

My golf started jumping out of gear a while a go and when I topped the oil up it was fine thereafter…..Just a thought.

he's not actually looked at anyhting yet, just listened to it jumping out of reverse. didn't think to check it as i assumed with an engine conversion being done it should have been topped up, but guess i shouldn't assume anyhting,,,,will have a look this w/end.

had a look at the haynes manual and it all sounds a bit complicated to me…have never done anyhting with a gear box/linkage before..should i be worried?

If I'm honest I spent a while with the haynes manual trying to work it out

but once under the car it all becomes clear and straight forward  8)

As ew says jumping out of gear can mean low or no gearbox oil 8O , but it is more usual for this to happen with 4th or 5th. Always worth checking gearbox oil level if you can. The horrible noise is probably the gear trying to disengage while you haven't got the clutch depressed, same as trying to take it out reverse without the clutch. Can you hold it in reverse ok?

have tried holding gear stick as firm as possible but it still slips out. sometimes it's ok, other times it is so bad i end up getting quite an audience due to the horrible loud crunching sound just trying to reverse park!
