Replacing a MK1 GTI body with a standard MK1 body

I have a sound standard MK1 (82)car and a  MK1 GTI (81) car with a poor, rusty body and I wish to swop the bodies. Can I just swop the engines, wiring, interior from the GTI to into the Standard Mk1 or do I have to swop the running gear, brakes as well. :dontknow:

Anyone have any advice?

The suspension and brakes are different too. Also, what engine size is the non-GTI? If its big block (1457cc or above) the engine mount is in the right place. Also, if its 4 speed then the steering rack will differ. Also the interior and headlining are different, plus the V5 will have "GOLF GTI" for the GTI on it, and not for the other one.

Hello Paul

As I thought, I have have to strip both cars and then swop all parts. This sounds a big job, but has the advantage of enabling me to restore each component as I take the GTI apart.

My past restoration experience has been on Triumphs - Spitfires and GT6, at least this has the benefit of not needing to carry out any welding on the body before I strip the mechanics down.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
