Rear strut spring cap orientation

Hi there,

I just installed complete new rear struts on my gti, but I am having doubts about the spring caps. The reason is that they have a cutout on one side (in the area where the spring rests) and I am not sure if that side should be pointing towards the wheel or towards the car. Actually it's more like pointing forward-and-out or backward-and-in.
It's been almost six months since I took the old struts off, so I can't recall how they were attached originally.

Even VW wasn't able to tell me more about this issue. Hate it when that happens.

doesnt matter how they are orientated, just that the spring is butted up against the lip nice and firm
