REAR CAMBER... OR WORSE?????

ELLO….

1989 MK1 GTI KARMANN CONVERTIBLE.

REAR WHEEL… PASSENGER SIDE… LEANS IN… IF IT WERE A CLOCK FACE, IT WOULD BE LEANING IN AT THE NUMBER TEN / ELEVEN… WHICH IS FORWARD TOP AREA.

I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A BUCKLED WHEEL, BUT HAVING HAD THAT PUT ON A MACHINE AT MY LOCAL GARAGE, THE WHEEL IS DEAD STRAIGHT.

IS THE REAR ARM BENT, OR… COULD THE CAMBER NEED RE-SETTING?

ANYONE????????????????????????????????

Firstly, (how) have you measured the camber?

Camber is not adjustable on the Mk1, so if its out, then its normally due to accident damage.

GREAT !

I AIN'T MEASURED THE CAMBER… I WAS MERELY TOLD ABOUT IT AS THE WHEEL WASN'T BUCKLED SO IT HAD TO BE SOMETHING ELSE… CAMBER WAS OFFERED UP AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION.

ALTHOUGH THIS A 1989 MK1… SO BY NON CABBY STANDARDS, ITS EFFECTIVELY A MK2… IN THEORY ANYWAY.

DON'T MIND ME… JUST CLUTCHING AT STRAWS COS THIS IS STARTING TO SOUND EXPENSIVE   :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:  :banghead:

Take it to a garage or tyre fitting place and get them to do a full geometry check, may as well do the front wheels too etc. Costs about £25 or so. Better than guessing or measuring it wrongly yourself.

RIGHT THEN…..

ON CLOSER INSPECTION, THE REAR QUARTER HAS BEEN REPAIRED… AND NOT VERY WELL, ITS JUST THAT DIRT AND GRIME HAD LEFT STEAKS OF BLACK STUFF RUNNING DOWNWARDS, SO IT HID A BAD REPAIR RATHER WELL.

BUT GOING ON THE LIKELIHOOD THAT IT PROBABLY IS ACCIDENT DAMAGE… WHAT AM I LOOKING AT COST WISE?

ROUGHLY WHAT SORT OF MONEY WILL IT COST TO PUT RIGHT?

NEW LEG PERHAPS??? OR IS IT INSPECTION TIME?

1. stop using CAPITALS its classed as shouting and is really annoying.

2. get it in the air and have a look. if it's the chassis rail where the rear beam attaches to then the car shouldn't be on the road. if not the rear beam is twisted. time for a new one. they go on ebay for between 50-100 english pound notes. changing over is a matter of removing the bolts from the chassis with snapping them and bolting on a new one. while your at it change the bushes and if original change the rear shocks too. then swap everthing else over.

I like the way you say "with snapping them" - have you lots of experience of them blighters snapping ? or just a typo :-)

Oh and more than likely you will have to repair the brake lines…

Cheers,
Ade

1:  THE CAR IS NOT ON THE ROAD… IT'S DOWN THE SIDE OF MY HOUSE.

2:  HTF (HOW THE FCUK !)… CAN YOU SHOUT, BY TYPING? THERE IS NO SOUND… I CAN HANDLE BLOCK CAPITALS, AS MY EYES AIN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE… BUT I DO LIKE THE IRONY, SEE I'M IN MY 40's AND ASSUMING THAT YOU ARE YOUNGER THAN ME, WHAT YOU'RE EFFECTIVELY SAYING IS… "OI, GRANDAD… KEEP THE NOISE DOWN"… PMSL.

3:  FIFTY TO ONE HUNDRED ENGLISH POUND NOTES… ANY IDEA WHAT THAT WOULD BE IN CAMBODIAN CHICKEN NECKS?

4:  HOW DO YOU REPAIR A BRAKE PIPE? REPLACE, SURE… BUT REPAIR… HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

ALSO….

MY NEIGHBOUR RECONS THAT THE REAR WHEEL ON THE DRIVER SIDE IS TOWING OUT.

I MYSELF CAN NOT SEE THIS, BUT HE RECONS THAT HE CAN… SO…..

IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ONE SIDE TOWING IN, AND THE OTHER SIDE TOWING OUT???????

THANK YOU.
