Rear axle problem

I removed the rear axle yesterday evening and got my self into some more work/trouble. One of the four bolts that holds the rear axle snapped off :(. Any ideas on how to replace it?

The only thing I come up with so far is to remove a fair share of metal around and including the broken bolt. Weld a new bolt on the "metal piece" and then weld the hole thing back to place?!?

Someone here did exacly that - think they drilled out the bolt and then cut an access hole in the side of the mount for a new bolt - welded it in place and then patched up the access hole.

Tnx for the reply, had that idea in mind, but drilling is not my favourite thing. My drills seems to have a habit of being too dull ;).

I ll investigate more this evening to see which way I ll use to go about it.

It was M6m62

Try PMing him

He seems to be captain of snapping off bolts.

Invest in some decent drill bits for a start, dormer are very good but pricey so best to buy them 1 at a time instead of in a set

I snapped one off too!

You will find in the boot that there are some taped up holes that are covered in seam sealer and painted over in the factory. You can cut one of these bigger to gain entry to the box section and weld in a new bolt, then weld the hole back up. I was respraying mine anyway so it all got covered up.

 If anyone is removing the rear axle I?d advise cleaning up the exposed threads 1st and using lots of WD40 and turning the nut backwards and forwards until it is off. You have been warned.

Yep found that tape. New bolt installed this evening just have to weld it in place also.

Cost: 3 drills :/ :), realized a bit late that I m a bit eager and are drilling with too high speed causing the drills to get dull in a matter of seconds. That leason is now learned :D

Hi - brings back bad, bad memories…………

Someone told me about that tape, but no matter how hard I searched (and I did !), I couldn't find it on mine.

Ah well, done now and new beam back on !

All the best,

Mark

I'm sorry to bump such an old thread…

but……. I did the same to my axle bolts…  :banghead:  :dontknow:

and the engine:

I've discussed it with my uncles and they say I should just drill out the bolt and put in a new one from the top (through the hole) and just secure it with the axle and nut (not welding it).
Would you guys say that's enough???

rather awkward to tighten the bolt as you can't hold the bolt from the top and tighten the nut at the same time. hence the welding in a new bolt.

One can sit in the car and hold the bolt from the top (there is a hole right above the bolt).
And one can tighten the nut from the underside of the car.

so your cars on ramps then not on axle stands.
if it's on stands i would not get in the vehicle.
and what happens if you have to drop the rear axle by yourself and don't have anyone to sit in the car when you need to remove it or put it back on?
