Post 76 the rack was mounted using clamps, pre 76 it was bolted direct to the bulkhead. That means the bulkheads are also different.

You can't buy them anymore. I have a VW NOS one I bought for a tenner  :D

Not sure if they can rebuilt?

Taking this forward….on a Golf Cabriolet 1984, how much play should there be in the steering rack? Mine 'feels' like it needs some attention as cornering can sometimes be a bit like guess work. I don't feel like I'm getting the most out of the car through lack of confidenced in the bends!
Any thoughts? And how much would a rack be. Would I need new bushes as well etc?
Cheers for any help.

Jack the car up and grab one of the front wheels rock it back and forwards while watching the steering wheel - there should be virtually no play.  Do it with the other wheel also.

Most decent motor accessory shops will get your rack rebuilt for less than ?50

Dano, GSF do a new steering rack for about ?45 from memory. Best bet first tho is to adjust the steering gear. I STILL need to do mine ( ) but i think it was lhasa here who did his.

Easy job once you can bend your arms in to the right position to adjust the locknut. This maybe enought to take up the slack.

Check the old posts from lhasa because he listed a good, detailed description on how to adjust the steering gear.

'Detailed' is the word!! 5 pages of reading and I'm left thinking that I'll keep my arms in one piece, pay my garage to do the work (I know them inside out Lhasa!!) and pay up.
All in all a hell of a lot less stressful on my part.

Lhasa, did you have to renew any bushes etc while carrying out your jobs?

Are you in Madchester?
