Polo gearbox

Hi all,

I have been away from the site for a while working hard!!!

A quick question for the technical / mechanics of the site.

I have just picked up a 1998 1.4 polo with a noisy gearbox, put some fluid into it and it came straight out of the bottom where the removable plate is!!! Is it worth stripping down or just replacing? Gearbox code is DKF.

If it's a replace job anybody got something suitable, or can they recommend what else would fit?

Its worth putting the fluid into the right place, rather than into the bellhousing. Is it an 020 or 084 box?

I put the fluid in through the top of the gearbox, by removing the bung and pumping a bit in. Is that the wrong place?

I have no idea where the right place is on a small block gearbox but I suspect its the same as on an 020 (big block engines'). There is a 17mm female hex plug at the side, most easily accessed in the left front wheelarch. The drain plug is a similar thing at the bottom.

Not sure where i poured the oil then!!!!!!!!!! oh Bugger springs to mind.

Sounds like you poured the oil onto the clutch and flywheel, not the first time i have heard of someone doing this, can you confirm you poured it in through the area where the white plug is on this pic? http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q290/AlexGrantUK/22042009001.jpg (ignore the fact its a different box) if you have then im afraid its gearbox off time

Mistakes are mistakes mate i've made quite a catastrophic error recently myself. the important thing is that you won't do it again and if in doubt do a search on here or google or ask before you undertake a task because someone else will have come across the same thing at some point. NO ONE is faultless. Don't leave because of 1 comment as there will be a positive one along in just a post or 2  :mrgreen:
