Please share some advice on replacing engine mounts.

Hi all

After recently purchasing my 1st MK1 I need to do quite a few jobs before an MOT one of which is to replace the engine mounts. Now I know the drivers side is a pain resulting in removing the timing chain. I do intend to replace the timing chain in about 3 months so I can do this particular mount then!

My question is can anyone share some advise on replacing engine mounts.

What order is best? etc etc?

One tip I've heard for the LHS mount is to hacksaw the old mount out, warm the surround in an oven while submerging the new rubber in ICE water then lubricate up and press in ASAP!I look forward to your thoughts ????

from recent experience mate. hack saw the old ones out. Not that even when you've cut a grove right through the inner ring (ensuring not to cut into the outer ring), you'll still need a metal chisel and hammer to bash it out.

once you've got them out, don't bother with the tricks… they don't work and you end up hurting yourself.

just take it to a garage, chuck em a fiver and ask them to press them in. it's a 2 minute job with a 20 tonne press.

my advice would be to drop the rear mount off completely. fit new rubber bush and just put it to one side for now.

remove the bolt out of the gear box mount. drop the gear box onto an axle stand and unbolt the mount from the gear box and put this to one side.

put the bolt back through the chassis leg mount and tie a piece of rope around the gearbox and onto the chassis leg just for some additional stability.

take to local garage and ask them to press in the new mount. go home and reverse the procedure (gearbox mount back, then the rear).

then when you do the timing belt and have that off, do a similar procedure for the engine side.

hope that helps. DON't try to hammer the mounts into the holders. it won't work.
