Park Brake MOT fail

Going through the list on my project cabby and one of the (many) fails was on the Park Brake Efficiency - a miserly 12% efficient.

Is this simply a case of replacing the handbrake cable or is there more to it?   :dontknow:
It seems pretty extreme!

Assuming cabby is same as tintop then there are 2 cables easily adjustable from handbrake end. If they are not seized would suggest removing rear drums and having a good clean in there as well as checking shoes for wear.

And manually adjust the auto adjusters so the shoes are close to the drums..... (The auto adjusers are notorius for jamming).

Cool…I had the rear axle off to do the brake hoses and the handbrake cable looked conspicuously newer than everything around it so hopefully it's just a case of adjustment.

Mine failed on this last week, I had to replace cylinders + shoes and passed.

ditto - mine was at 12% efficiency - all that was required was wheels and drums off - good clean, adjust and refit - 45 minutes

An old post I know - was searching around..

Mine had failed on parking efficiency too and was quoted £380 to fix the rear brakes. The mechanic had measured the drums and their thickness was below spec.

To get it through the MOT quickly and to not pay the garage's high prices I simply replaced the pads and cables. The thicker pads meant it passed with flying colours on the re-test and the cables ensured there was no stretching going on.

So I saved ££ by getting a good price brake refurb kit at a later date and doing it myself at my leisure.
