outer cv joints on 100mm driveshafts ?

i have a pair of 100mm driveshafts and i need to buy  new outer cv joints, (i don't  have the old ones ). am i right in thinking that the outer cv joint for a mk1 will be the same for both size driveshafts/ hub carriers and will be a standard  fit , or do i need to buy specific cv joints . not sure what the driveshafts came off, but they are going onto a g60 box. cheers for any help .

90mm or 100mm outer CVJs will fit onto the spline end of the driveshaft and into the hub; but the 100mm ones are approx 4mm thicker, this will make a significant enough difference so you need to match the correct stuff up. If your driveshafts are late cabby or caddy ones, then I think they're sized to use 100mm outers. Also when you fit them, make sure the CVJ boot doesn't rub on anything, its a very close tolerance with other stuff in the area.

had a chance to make a start on the car this weekend and i noticed that the outer cv joints had been left attached to the hub and the driveshaft removed.?  has anybody  ever seen driveshafts removed like this before and is it possible to refit by simply pushing  driveshaft back into position ?

The CV is held on with a snap ring. A good clout with a hammer knocks them off. I'd try and remove them from the hub and reassemble on the bench so you can see what you're doing.

Quick hijack…!

Helping a friend with her car and from what i can feel the 3 bearing prong at the end of the driveshaft (wheel side) that fits into the spherical cv joing has come away, effectively i can just feel the end of the shaft and running my fingers back i feel a notch. How do i get the 3 prong bearing back on if possible and what will of broke to let it off?! Is that a part i can get?

Cheers, can get photos if your not sure what im on about!

they'll o done that so it could be rolled, as i think if you take the shafts out of hubs and try and roull it about the bearings will fall out or somet?! so they'll o done it for that reason! should be able to just puty it back on,
take them off put in bench vice, and bang on!

OK sooo anyone know the answer to the original question too,

wether with 100mm inner cv shafts (rocco, cabby etc) the other cv (outer) is interchangable or specific? and where is cheapest for replacement cv's?

Nick,
I've got a set of 100mm rocco shafts.  As mentioned above the outer cv's have 2 sizes.  My original GTi hubs would not fit the later outer cv's.  The hub locked up solid as soon as you tried to tighten the hub nut.
I get the feeling VW / GSF only sell the later hubs now so they will need the corresponding larger CV's.
So to answer the question - No they do work with different hub, however the cv's can be taken off the 90/100mm driveshafts and are interchangeable onto other shafts.
