Noisy brakes and grinding gear

Hi to everybody on the forum, it's my first post, and i look forward to spending lots of time on the forum…

I recently got my first car, yes a mk1 golf. It's a 1.3 98 chico. After a few days of driving the car, I noticed a few problems which i hope is minor…firstly after it's been raining the brakes make a screeching noise until the car stops, when it's dry it doesn't happen and then the other thing is that second gear grinds unless i shift very slowly…

P.s i got the car with 17" rims which makes the car very slow on the takeoff, maybe it has something to do with the screeching?

Thanks in advance

Probably cheap brake pads....

or a lack of material on the brake pads.
ditch the 17"s they are way to big for a 1.3 to pull. (and way to big for a mk1 golf period)

gearbox oil change might help with the second gear crunch as might a gear linkage repair kit.
