New set of tyres

Ok, having taken endless amounts of stick from DjEv at Gaydon about my 'Limited Edition Road Champ' (!) tyres, I have decided to start the hunt for a decent set of new rubber.

I have had a look at previous posts but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer as to what type is best ie Dunlop, Goodyear, Yoko etc. I would appreciate any comments as to the best/ most original style tyres on the market.

….. if only to wipe the smile of Ev's face!!!

Michelins are unarguably the best all-round tyres but are usually the most expensive! There are brands like Toyos and Yokos, are usually very sticky in the dry but crap in the wet.

Dunlop loose there shape at an early age, many a rover seen with a bulge in the tread pattern, with origional tyres on.I like firestone, good allrounders, used to fit thousands when i was a fitter at tyresales,Avon tyres are exellent, star performer are the same make under a different brand, pirelli good, but wear down quick,Michelin are very good, all fleet cars used to have them,as cheaper brands go kumho tyres are ace, used them myself, can not complain at all,GT radials or gadjah tunghal are plastic not rubber,no thanks, and last of all motorway remoulds, great if you want a rim covered in lead to balance them up…..

New Tyres

Hi Dano

When I read yr post re 'champ' tyres I couldnt believe it….until last week I had a full set of those…I thought I was the only one in England with them on……Changed them last week for Dunlop Sport One……they looked good…..they were selling four for three…..they stick to the road OK!!
Good luck.

I find Dunlop sports to be a good and affordible tyre but if you can afford Michelins go for them, I have used both on an Alfa 155 1.8 Tspark which used to be hard on tyres (It might of been my driving  ), The main differncences with the Michelins was they did more miles 11000 compared to 8000 and when they get worn, but still legal, they still perform where as the Dunlops got decidely dodgy in the wet. The Alfa is a heaver car than the Golf so may be less apparent but the power output was 125Bhp not 115 I think for Golf GTI. I have 15" Toyos on my golf (On when I bought it) they are almost gone, grip well in the dry, but haven't had any rain yet to comment on wet driving.

Let us know how you get on may help me decide when the time is due.

Thanks for all the replies guys! The Road Champs seem to be a budget tyre, put on by my brother in law when he had the car before me. When he saw it last weekend he commented on them still being on the cabby and smirked!!

The tyres are ok in the dry but its always a bit dodgy when I wish to 'press on' a little on damp or wet roads. I don't have the confidence in them as they always fell that they are ready to let go.

I have a contact who may be able to get some discount so Michelins being the best (as quoted may be the way to go). In the past I have tried Dunlops, on my Mk3 16v and found that they wore out fairly quickly. Goodyears replaced them and were doing ok until I sold it though.

I will let you know what I decide in the next few weeks. Any further comments appreciated.

(TC - we are 'The Champs'!!)

Good place to look for tyres, they have reviews of tyres on there as well, not sure whether they are as cheap as they like to boast but it seems pretty good!
