1. Buy a secondhand box for (going rate is) ?50 or so, swap it and see how it is. It might not be perfect, its a bit of a risk but it would be better than yours if it has a serious fault. You might have bad luck and have to buy another gearbox again, so its ?100 all in, plus the hassle of changing it twice, collecting the box, etc.
2. Play safe and buy a reconditioned box at around ?450.
Option 2 has its advantages if your car is a daily driver and you rely on it, or if you can't do the work itself and have to pay the labour for a garage to do it. In the grand scheme of things, ?450 isn't that much for a gearbox - there's many cars where its ?1000-1500 for a box!
