mk1 golf

Hi i have a mk1 golf took it for a mot yesterday and the garage are saying the chassis number comes up as a golf auto????

I informed the police and they have got back to me saying  the chassis number is correct?

now this is the weird bit, where the chassis number is does it have a plate that rivets on or r they stamped in??im on about the number at the back not the black plate at the front,as mine has come of it looks like its been glued on  i have added a pic,any help would be appreciated, police have said its ok.Its only 1 digit out on the vosa website so police say it could be a input error wen i say one digit out i mean one digit is missing,it has had a new style mot b4 so dont see why it has come up as this??

I have informed the police and they say they are not concerned about it and they have closed the matter so as far as they r concerned it is ok?there are no numbers underneath the plate,i have done a vin check and it does come up with the right car details?it says that vw used z as a 'filler'charachter in vin codes,on vosa websote it comes up as chassis number without the 'z' so that explains that just wanna no y this plate has come off like this?maybe it has gone rotten and someone stuck it back on?the black plate on the front of the car also has the same chassis number?

is the rain tray it is sat on a new1? i would be concerned as it looks like its a stolen car, take it to the police station and get them to check it, because if they pull u up at a later date and find this they will take it off you,

often during ringing the old numbers are ground out and then painted over. The police have a method of making them visible again I believe.
I would advise you that if the Police are not interested then you could find out where your nearest VOSA centre is (the ones that do tests when you build your own) and ask them if they would have a look at it for you.

I would have though you should be able to tell yourself if an old numbers been ground out or had filler over it. Are there any signs that the panel the number is stamped to has been replaced? Any signs of welding? It could have rusted.

Post up some pics of the area if you aren't too sure if you like?

Cheers,

Ross
