There's 2 issues: 1 the Mk2 uses a different transmission mount, so the gearbox needs different studs (locations) to mount to - many earlier gearboxes do have these though so its not a big issue.
2 the starter motor on later Mk2s has 3 hole fitment, whereas the mk1 has 2 hole fitment. Its not an issue fitting a mk2 starter to a mk1 because one of the holes is unused and the other 2 line up fine, but it will be an issue if only 2/3 of the mounts the starter motor has, are taken up. Its only a minor issue though.
Also bear in mind you'll need to get the CVJ flange size right, and the reverse switch should be the same type, especially if the car has an MFA (if it doesn't, then you can adapt the bigger rectangular switch to the older non-MFA wiring).
The guide on the left should be able to help you out, if you interpret it properly - it was written as a guide to fitting mk2 boxes to mk1, etc.

unless what you wanted to know is if you could fit a mk2 engine block into your mk1 with a mk1 gearbox, in that case answer is yes
loads of 020 info here including flange size/swap, rear mounts and mfa gearbox sender adaption for later cars:
