MK1 Gearbox change, Urgent advise needed

Hi,

Can someone provide some guidance on gearboxes ( 5 spead manual on a GTI) please. I need to change mine. What do I need to look for were there many different types of gearboxes, if so what do i need to look for?

I new to these types of cars so any help would be appreciated..

Many thanks in advance.

What's the reason you're changing it??

If its broken then you could try and get your original rebuilt or see if you can find someone breaking a gti that has a gearbox for sale?

I saw a crinkly peanut tomorrow

Hi Miss MK1,

Thanks for your quick response. The car has been lowered by about 60mm form what Ive been told. I think the box took a hit and oil is leaking out. The clutch is very very heavt and stiff.

I have aanother box that I took ut of my brother car that was written off last year.It was on a E plate

My car is on a 'A' plate. I dont know anything about gearboxes. How do I go around to find out if it is the same box or it can be put on to my car?

I been trying to get mthe car on the road for about a year now, needs the gearbox doing , so I i can drive to to the bodyshop to bring it back to looking good :).

Any sggestions would be of great help. :)

Many thanks for you time so far :)

Firstly get the code off the box, you'll find it stamped into the underside of the bellhousing.  For an easy swap your best bet is to source an identicle codded box then you know all will be the same.  Plenty of other boxes will fit, you just need to match the flange size, mounting and the switch for the electrical.  You can mix n match most components but a like for like swap is by far the easiest.
Some reading for you…..

Hi Guys,

Thank so soo much for this information, Ill be checking the gearbox codes to see if the other one I have is usable.

Thinking ahead, any suggestions on what clutches are good, standard or performance ones? Any recommendations?

Once again many thanks for your time guys, really appreciate it.
