Just looking for ideas on whats best to improve the brakes on my 83 Golf gti. Its Still on drums on the rear. They just seem as if there especially bad as it wont even lock them up.

you wont lock the rears up. there is a valve that stops them locking.

a good service and a well setup cross bar and rear brake adjusted properly should see the brakes work more than is needed. other options are a large master cylinder.

after that your talking mk3 brakes on the rear and bigger discs on the front.

i have serviced the fronts and the rears are almost new. When i speak about them not locking up im speaking about the fronts!

Calipers seem to be operating properly dont know what else.

Something is definitely wrong because you should be able to lock up all 4 wheels with agressive enough braking. The car shouldn't lock the rears before the fronts.

When did you last have the brakes serviced, eg fluid change, remove the drums and calipers and clean/inspect components?

I checked out the calipers myself last night and they seem ok. The rears not for a while, Would the fluid make a big difference as i believe its quite old!!!

thanks
