missing gearbox plug/cap??

There should be a plastic cap there, with a removeable centre part. It's used by the VW dealer, who would have pulled up the centre bit to insert a VAG gadget to check the timing on the flywheel.
It doesn't give access to the innards of the gearbox, just the clutch.
You don't need to worry about it not being there, except in the following scenarios:
You might drop enough oily fluids in there (during servicing, by mistake) to ruin the clutch.
In a one-in-a-million fluke, a stone (loose-chipping kind) might be flicked into the hole and cause damage to the clutch, etc.
You decide if you think it's worth going to the breakers to get one off any mid-eighties VW gearbox…
