Lowering springs

Fellas- I want to lower my mk1 GL but being on a tight budget, was wondering if it was ok to just change the springs only and fit to original shockers, thinking of a 60mm or 80mm drop.

Any probs with this?

Cheers

Probs - Yes!

Your dampers travel will be more than the length of the shorter spring, so the spring will fall out of its seat when the car is lifted and possibly when cornering hard (happened to me when I was young and stupid running cut springs - brown pants moment of the highest order as the car becomes very unstable!).

If you are going that low you ideally need a matched set of springs and dampers as the dampers should be shorter than standard.

If you are considering 80mm, you should consider coilovers as you will get a better ride.  The cheaper ones such as supersports are not great, but are better than a fixed 80mm spring! I have the supersports and find them OK, especially for the price.
