lowering problems

hi

today i thought it would be a great idea to lower my car so i fitted the wheels and foudn out the bolts are quite long enough (cry ) but they wil do for testin purposes and then i fitted my new springs iv bought some 13" stage 1 ronal turbo's and after i found out the saprings that were already fitted were 40mm lowering sprinsgs (which i didnt know before) i removed them and fitted my newly bought springs which were only 35mm    how gutted was i really

so here i have my golf in many bits. when i finaly sorted it all back out and dropped it off the stands and jack i find out there is around 5" above the wheels and it looks like iv fitted pram wheels on a 4x4 i could have sat and cryed

well after a moments thought (in temper) i removed the springs and cut off a coil to see how much lower it would actualy have to go to look any good on the wheels .. then re-fitted the springs and yet again another coil had to come off so im now down to two brand new springs on the front which i butcherd in temper and if im honst need another coil cuttin off to look the part     i swear its now 100mm+ lower and needs to go more

so what im askin is guys where do i find myself a set of coil overs for the right money that will do the job as iv figured out it needs to be around 150mm lower than normal

any help at this point would be greatly apppreciated

thanks

Sounds like you had a bad day!

You will struggle to find coilovers that will achieve 150mm drop! You don't need that much…

You say you fitted 13" phase one's, but you don't say what size tyres you have on them? By reducing the size of the tyre, the gap between the top of the tyre and the arch increases. You have to lower the car further to compensate for this, which you obviously figured out the hard way!
The problem you face is that when the arch/tyre gap looks right, your sump will be practically on the floor.
This is the only problem with the euro "Rollerskate" look. To get a useable ride height, you will have to put up with a bit of a gap at the arch.

To give you an idea…
I have supersport coilovers on mine. Not bad for the price, though they are a little stiff as they are not adjustable. I have 14"" rims with 185/50/14's on and I currently have 65mm clearance from the ground to the bottom of my lower front strut brace. There is still about 50-60mm of thread left on the coilovers, so they could go down a lot further. As it is, I think the car sits perfectly. Not too high, and not too low.

as Al says - remember road holding and some degree of comfort - slamming your car is fine for shows etc but i challenge anyone to take me for a run in a mk1 on normal roads with like 10mm between the c'legs and the ground and say to me it handles great… it won't

run your 13's with a little room round them - i think it looks good - the plastic arch spats help visually reduce the distance - there was a silver mk1 1600gti in Golf mag a while ago with silver ats classics on it - wasn;t ridiculously slammed and it looked perfect.

thanks for the replys guys

right the profile of the tyres is 165/55/13 so quite a low profile therefore look even smaller .. suppose i see your point about the ride as im certain it would be pritty shockin if i was to lower it that much but very soon im gona be workin away alot so wont be drivin the car half as much as i thought i would be so im thinkin maybe i could put up with the bad ride?? iv also managed to find some coilovers that will lower it 120mm for around ?400-500 which i thought was alot of money but i suppose you get what you pay for like everything else so thats an option

another option would be to sell the smaller wheels ( ) and buy something abit bigger but reallly would rather stay away from that as i love these wheels

any of you guys got 13's on your golfs?? and have pics just to give me an idea of what it could look like if i dont decided to lower it 120mm

all other surjestions would be helpful

thanks

Most coilovers will get you down by 120mm, though some will only go 100mm. The supersports are probably your best bet at around the ?400 mark, they will get you as low as you can possibly need to go. with the 13's on, they will probably be right down near the max to get the wheel/arch look right, by which point you will be very close to the ground.

If the car is only going to be a toy, as mine is, you will be able to put up with the ride, though if you are going to drive it regularly, this may not be the way forward for you!

Let us know what you decide to do!

AL.

EDIT: PS - if you go too low you get the problem of the drive shaft hitting the chassis leg, just in case you were not aware of that!

That's less than I paid for em over a year ago… Did that inc. VAT? I think Venom advertise their prices minus VAT…

You could try performance solutions - Oliver who I spoke to said that they actually supply Venom from time to time, so they may be able to do them slightly cheaper.
