knock knock knocking.....gearbox??

Hello,

Somthing is up with my 83 1.8 gti Cabby.

A knocking noise has started when driving along, can be heard when accelerating, constant pace and loudly when engine braking.

It increases speed with engine speed then when changing up a gear it slows down again.

When driving along if you hold the clutch in or put it in neutral the noise stops.

i have noticed that the engine is running a little hot, i also need to top up coolent as i am a little low but can't see how this i related. i also had a load of gaskets replaced to stop oil leeks a couple of months ago as some douchbag, me, over filled the engine with oil.

anyone have any ideas as i am really stuck!

Your bang on.

Went into crazy quiffs and took it for a drive with rich. C.V. joints were dry as  bone and some nobhead had put engine oil in the gearbox. 2 second hand driveshafts at 20 quid each, bargain, plus an hours labour.

Love that place!
