Knock Knock...

I have a knocking coming from my front left wheel area when I am driving. It increases with the speed of the wheel (when I accelerate so does the noise/ slower, slower the noise)

It seems to stop when I put the clutch down but im not sure if thats because im then not accelerating.

Dont think its a wheel bearing cause it is more a knocking than a whurring and its not constant.

Not a bumpstop.

Dont think its the CV joint either as it does not get worse when I turn.

I was thinking it might be the driveshaft as I had a look under the car and the one on the left seemed to have more movement when i shook it than the right.
Saying all this I am fairly new to this so it might just be something completely different. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Also if it is my driveshaft should I be driving it or is it on the verge of snapping. thanks

obviously you've checked your wheel nuts???? but then that more of a crunching noise
But driveshaft sounds about right, mine sounded nasty when it popped out and scared the hell out of me, didn't even get any notice
Other than that nothing else is loose i assume

So many dubs so little time, so much rust

Yeh checked my wheel bolts there tight.
At the risk of sounding stupid… Does the driveshaft stop turning when you put the clutch down?

No mate it keeps turning. i like to think if you don't know the answer then there are no stupid questions!

Have you got any suspension mods or changed any suspension components recently?

No havent touched anything.
I drove it down a steep hill this morning and when i took put my foot off the accelerator the noise stopped, when I put my foot on but hardly increased speed it started again.

Sounds like CV joint to me. Putting the clutch down releases the drive force and so releases the pressure on the ball and its track. For similarreasons there would no noise on over-run down the hill.

I would guess the same too.  By the sounds of your descripton it would seem to be along the drive shaft/drive train.  Check these joints, generally the weakest link apart from the bearings but that's a different noise altogether.

thanks all, I took it to the garage this morning and it was the CV joint nearest the wheel.
I didnt think the CV joint was part of the driveshaft   until I had it shown to me this morning. Thats why in my first explaination I said it wasnt the CV.
On the plus side its only ?40 for a recon driveshaft, so it was no way near as expensive as I thought it was going to be.
