I'm not 100% as it's a while since I've had the top mounts off the car but I think that's normal. Have you checked for play in the lower ball joints?

ok cheers Gav, I remeber doing my mk2 and it didnt have as much movement, but it is a slightly different setup.
I'll go give everything a yank about and see what moves i guess, trying to eliminate what i can before i take it to a garage

Have you fitted the small spacer sleeve under the mount?
Remember once the mount is bolted to the body there range of movement is limited. You'll have the lateral movement of the strut and then there needs to be a bit of play in the bearing to allow for camber.

the spacer sleeve is fitted and a washer under the top mount and on top.
think I'll put it back together and see what i can find with the drive shafts, lower ball joints and arb's.

Mine makes that noise so I'd say no. They should be quiet.
My offside is fine, near side knocks really bad

thanks for your reply possle.
i didn't think it was right myself, but having fitted everything the same way i always have, im not sure why it has so much play.
I did notice the spacer sleeve that goes inside the top-mount sits about 2mm above the top of the hole it sits in, so when the nut and washer are tightened down the washer is resting on the top of the spacer sleeve and not the top-mount. (if you can picutre it). I may take the spacer out and grind it down until its just below. but somethings not right when i buy new parts and have to grind them down….

I'd be sending those back, there shouldn't be as much play in that bearing
