Shouldn't be any play - the shaft is held in by a plate bolted to the end of the engine - the bolts are accessible through the holes in the intermediate shaft pulley.

Is the ticking the same or half engine revs?

NB - the intermediate shaft and cam shaft go round at half revs, the crank pulley - which drives the water pump and alternator via the fan belt - goes round at engine rev speed.

Easiest way to check is probably to put a white blob of paint on the crank pulley (or watch an ovious mark on it) and see of the tick is once per revolution, or once every two revolutions.

Are both the bolts holding the intermediate pulley on done up tight? If one came loose it might rub on the pulley  8O .

Check also the distributor - might be something adrift in there.

could be shaft bearings on way out? give a grinding or light knocking noise?

The noise is a high pitched ticking sounds like its from further up in the engine ( from the head ) ive changed the hydraulic lifters, it sounds like a noisy injector but ive not heard one that loud before! The engine runs prefectly- no misfires no lack of power etc
