I've broken my nipple!

Post

I've broken my nipple!

So I'm bleeding my brakes, with a new brake bleeding kit, thinking there's a future for me in car mechanics, then I'm tightening the nipple back up once sufficiently bled when, snap!

can't find the nipple but looks like it's unfixable.  Look in haynes tells me I just need to replace the wheel cylinder but there are three types of drum???? Automatic, cable, manual?

Haven't a clue what I'm after, are cylinders the same for all types of drum?

Also, how do I get the drum off? as I was going to do this about 2 weeks ago and couldn't see how?

Thanks in advance for any help, will post on my resto thread for the little else I did tonight but cry about the catastrophe of my nipple….It was going so weeeellllll!

i can send u a nipple if thats any good to ya, i removed both my cylinders last week for replacement, new cylinders are only around 8 quid thou.
to remove your drum take off the hub cap, remove split pin and locking cap, undo nut and pull off drum(i needed the help of a large flat headed screw driver for one side).

I swapped my wife for a Golf GTI!!!

couldnt you use a small bolt extractor, would be easy to remove with the nipple made from alloy

dudes, firstly, thanks.

changed the cylinder but not sure I've got the right one.

I have the "wedge type drum" on a late 83 gti cab, I am 99% sure I don't have a brake regulator (I spend an hour looking for it after fitting my new coilovers).

The cylinder I got is for an 83 gti with 17.5 cylinder? and it physically fits, is that okay, or have i fitted the wrong one?

thanks in advance for any help.

also, after taking apart the drum and removing the shoes, replacing the cylinder.  I put everything back exactly as it came off and now my brakes are no longer and even my handbrake doesn't work, suggestions??

Cheers.

firstly you will need to bleed the brakes.

sorry that was mean

you need to adjust the rear brake so it's actually going to touch the drum again. theres a how to in the haynes. i think it involves a screwdriver though one of the wheel bolt holes but it's been a while.

Oh man! I posted in another thread.

I need to rebuild my rear brake drums. Like yours, my nipple has broken off on one side (sounds a bit wierd to say that out aloud).

Is there a kit available? what would be included in it? and how much would  it cost? does GSF do it?

I'm rebuilding an 82 gti and the brakes need attention. Help!
