Howling noise from front wheels
Since I removed the gas suspension from my car I have now a list of problems that the extremely hard ride was hiding. The steering seems really light and when one wheel goes over a bump the car steers sharpley towards the bump. Also there's a howling noise from the front wheel as the speed increases. Does this mean the wheel bearings are knackered and could this cause the steering to act so badly whilst driving?

Maybe. You might want to check for play in the rack also.
Another cause maybe that your tracking is way out now you've changed your shocks. Did you set up the camber when you changed the shocks?
I'd get camber and tracking checked.

…or perhaps there's a small dog lurking inside your wheel?!
Sorry, shouldn't joke - do as Rich suggests!

I haven't had anything like them checked yet. I've had the wheels re-balanced and there was no spiggot rings fitted between the alloys and hubs which has been done. I'll try and find some one to look at the tracking and camber this week. The thing is I'm runing out of money and I've spent on money stuff to get it lookin standard but it needs more spending on the engine and stuff  .
Its got a good stereo though .

If your camber and tracking are way off you can sometimes see it by eye. Set the wheels straight ahead and look to see of the wheels are vertical (a spirit level will give you a clue), and parallelish (can measure distances from the inside of the wheel rim to the other wheel across the car at the front of the wheel and again at the back.
These are only rough measurements but will give you an idea.
