How much play in CV joints??????? Help!!!!!
1st noticed it after a blast over Woodhead pass including a cackhanded down change to accelarate before we met a 7.5 tonner coming other way. Stopped and a when checking it in a layby with wheels jacked up sounded like gearbox was making a grating sound?
Got it home and when left for a while whilst the kettle went on, rotating wheels the GB didn't make grating sound now? And no obvious knocking or loose bits in suspension.
Dropped GB oil which was dark brown (carbonised from over heating?) and only 1.5l came out not the 2 that should have came out. This made me think the knocking is something in the GB or diff thats giving up?
This morning started remove box. Undone passenger side drive shaft and inner joint as a little play in it, can rotate it 1/2 cm without shaft moving. Is this normal or should there be no rotational slack or is this possibly where my knockings coming from :dontknow:
Ideas please

Normal , inner Cv joints can knock badly goes away when you free wheel the car . Worse when warm . I had same problem with my old 8v , was told inners never wear , not the case . Think it cost me less that ?30.00 a shaft to refurb them .
I would replace the inner and outer joints . Cheap enough [well better than a gearbox] .

Think it still did it even when wheeling
Not removed box yet just undone drive shafts and removed starter etc
Think I'll change the CV joint, put all back together and see if that makes any difference.

Got all back together and its still knocking exactly the same :cry:
This means two things;
Worn-ish inner CV joints don't seem cause problesm (unless one of the other CVJs is goosed but they all felt OK and the worse ones been replaced now…)
I still have a problem
Tax runs out end of month so might just SORN it and have a go later when I'm a bit more motivated, unless anyones got any ideas?

Did you ever get this issue resolved?
I have a similar knocking noise on my MK1 Cab.

Spent a few hrs until my fingers went numb with cold removing drive shafts from G/B and starter motor etc. Got it up on axle stands and ready to remove box when help arrives. Had some friends round on New Years day but Mrs Early would have gone mental if we'd have disappeared into garage for hours on end….

As I said my mk1 has a very similar knocking noise. Have a read of my thread and see if it sounds like your noise.

Mate came down Sat and helped swap box. Found the old garage fan heater so that helped keep us warm but it was not as bad as the other week. Swap went pretty straight forward, the speedo cable was stuck fast, at the gearbox end it has a metal bit shaped a bit like a deep paint tin lid recessed into the G/B. I had to poke about with various small screw drivers to get it to move. The one on the replacement box popped out OK? The cresent moon shaped small tin plate behind the drivers side drive flange was a pain having a 10mm AND 11mm bolt that both looked the same when upside side lead on your back underneath the car…..
Got it back together and no funny noises or knocking on short test run.
Went on another run last night to warm up the oil and left it draining out overnight. Just squirted in 2l of 75w90.
The old box had done 180,000 miles and nearly 30 years but wished I'd changed the oil and/or not broken my box by driving like a muppet. She's an old girl now and needs treating with respect
Noticed the vertical rod in the selector mechanism could do with re-bushing but that can wait until spring has sprung. Also need to paint the green end cap to stop it rusting more than it already has.
Replacement box after I'd soaked in petrol, scrubbed and power washed it…. I was lucky enough to find this correct '7G' a few miles from work, cheapish and it appears to work OK
Had a fence post spare from fence I put up last summer that came in very handy;
Is it 10mm or 11mm
