How do I change a 4 speed to a 5 speed??

Hi I have a 1983 GL 4 speed would love to put a 5 speed for motorway driving but whas just wondering whats the easiest way to do this??

Im not sure if the mounts are the same or even if the clutch is the same? And which 5 speed box model is the best ?? Can anyone shed any light??

Is it a small block 1.3? If so you need a 5 speed from a Polo if not any 020 box will fit.

no 020 boxes wont fit a small block, you need an 085 box. 1.0-1.3 mk2/3 polo or MK2 Golf, 1.4 MK3 Golf and later Polo

In the UK all GL models were 1.5 litres big block. 1.3GL was only available on the continent. But it would have helped if the OP clarified etc. Linkage will need to be modified including a bracket on the steering rack, I think?

Which one is best? Avoid the 4+E, its too widely spaced. The close ratio 5 speed from a GTI would be best, whether the 3.89FD or 3.67FD works best…..depends if you want it a little lower rpm (but also less acceleration) in 5th gear eg on motorways and A roads.
