Hole in Gearbox?

Hi,

I am new to this forum so forgive me if this has already been covered.

I have owned my MK1 Cabrio for nearly 4 months now and I have had nothing but trouble with my gearbox. The week after I bought it the fifth gear nakered up, so I had to spend ?250 on re-conditioning it. Found out there was no oil in it!

Even though the box has been re-conditioned there still seems to be a whining noise in 5th gear.

I believe this is due to lack of oil again, but I seem to be having a problem with filling the gearbox up with 2 litres of oil. I seem to fill it to about 1 litre and oil starts to pour from this hole at the bottom of the gearbox (pic below), Does anyone know what this hole is for? I have had to plug this in to allow me to put the 2 litres in, but i'm not sure this is suppose to be plugged?

For info my gearbox has FD21012 stamped on it.

Any ideas?

Regards

Mike.

I have dropped the oil several times and attempted to fill with the specified 2 litres, but seems to pour from this hole after about 1 litre of oil has been put in?

I spoke to VW today and they said there should be a M8 x 28mm bolt that goes in there to secure the reverse gear spindle.

I have just been out and tried an M8 bolt in there, but there doesnt seem to be any thread to screw into??

I suppose my reverse gear works fine so I might just plug it in?

thanks for your replys,

Mike.
