Help! Savage horrible crunching sound!

Hey guidos and guidettes,

Here's the thing, when i'm reversing i have a horrible crunching noise coming from the gearbox, sounds like a cat going through a grinder, it's horrible.

Although, the other day it was crunching away, although then when i took it out of reverse and into neutral and costed backwards slowly down a slight decline, it was still crunching!?

This made me very confused, as how could the gearbox still be crunching when it wasn't even engadged!? Is it still the gearbox!?

Cheers,

Shaney.

Could be something in the gearbox itself (like, a broken tooth, etc) or something's seriously wrong with the diff which only reveals itself in reverse.

new box time! most likely the reverse gear is chipped, and bits of it are floating about inside there. wont be long before it dies completly so replace it sooner rather than later

Have you done this kind of work before?

its a relatively easy job, but time consuming and hard work (gearbox is bloody heavy!) but at the end of the day it comes down to undoing bolts, and unleashing your full vocabulary of harsh language.

i would get a new clutch for it: (go for a 210mm kit, matched to your gearbox. if yours is 1.5-1.6 then get a 210mm flywheel to go with it)
AVS Car Parts - [The VW - Audi - Seat - Skoda Parts Specialist]

and a seal kit:

lots of info on doing the various seals:

clutch swap info, but the pressure plate -> crank bolts should be done up to 60nm then a 90degree turn, not 30nm!!

mk2 golf gearbox swap info, not 100% same obviously but close enough, if anything easier on a mk1 as no subframe in the way. remove mounts and it pretty much will fall right out the bottom!

ah, well no need to touch the 6 flywheel -> crank bolts and the broke site is no good and neither are the seals.

gearbox swap page some of the tips there still apply, main thing is get a mate to help its hell on your own!

get yourself a mk1 brown haynes manual will have everything you need re clutch swap
