HELP Power steering problems

Please help me!
I've got retro fitted power steering on my mk1 convertible which has sprung a leak. I took it to the local garage today to get it replaced but I've got no idea who makes the rack. A mk2 was lined up and appears to be totally different!
Anyone got any ideas of people/companies who carried out this type of mod or what donor OEM's were used? I'm getting nowhere fast and it needs sorting ASAP… :banghead:

Apprently VW UK did some semi-official PAS Cabbys and the contractor used Nissan Bluebird racks? :dontknow:

Other companies did conversions also but not sure what parts they used.

Go back to un-assisted and save yourself all these problems with over complicated cars.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Yes - saw the other threads and links to other sites. I thought I'd struck gold with one post as it appeared to be about my car! (The guy I bought it from lived nearish to Hemel and told me it cost ?1500 to install it…). However, I've just spoken the guy at the garage and the part number for the Nissan Blubird rack didn't seem to match mine  :(  ).
I don't think I can go back to non PAS though - my old baby was a real pig at slow speed (and I even broke the weld connecting the steering transfer box to the engine bay bulkhead when parking in town). And I'm too lazy…

Find yourself a local PAS reconditioner and let them have a look. They will tell you what it is.

I've had enough!  :x
I'm riping out the PAS and going back to the 'ol skool standard mk1 rack - at least that way there will be less to go wrong and I'll be able to get some spares.
Thinking of selling the bits (possibly to someone who has more patience than me!). Look for a classified coming soon…

Hi all,
I've decided to get the rack refurbished at Western Power Steering (Bristol) instead of getting a standars rack fitted (www.westernpowersteering.com, in case anyone finds themselves in the same boat).
Just wanted to say thanks for all the PM's with advice/info.  :D

Have they told you what it is yet?

No - kind of lost faith in the local garage really - the only reason I'm sticking with them is that I want the tracking and balancing done after the rack is replaced. Hopefully the guys in Bristol hopefully can shed some light.
As quite a few peeps seem to want to upgrade to PAS, I'll get all the info I can along with pics and PM anyone who wants them.

Hey Key - wouldn't mind an ID on the rack when it gets repaired - the company that does it should know the make and model carit came from.

An ID on the pump and some pics would be great too.

I'd like to see it in the flesh sometime when it is fixed - you are only down the road from me - sort of  :D

No - they will get a clearer idea when it's out…
Just been looking around the engine bay and got the following info:
Hydraulic unit has the following written on it:
VW Audi
Germany
053.145.515
MZO

The reservoir, also VW Audi, has Nur Zugelassenes, ATF-OL, Verwenden with the numbers 2602 listed perpendiculary to the main writing.
Not sure if any of the above is recognisable/helpful to anyone but I've got a few pics if anyone wants them.
