help needed plz offset prob

ive brought some 13" ats classics and i think they are the wrong offset because the foul the calipers on the front. the car is a mk1 gti cabriolet. is it ok to use 20mm spacers to get the wheels away from the calipers? and the car is lowered 40mm all round aswell. and will the tyres touch the arches if i use spacers? the tyres are 175/45/13.

cheers leer0506   :?

Your 13" Classics should give no fitting problems despite the offset .

Are your calipers standard ?

You should not need spacers so i would look again at those calipers .

i think they are standard calipers but they are quite big and im real gutted because the classics would have looked stunning on thye car. is there a way of telling if the calipers are standard? im no mechanic so i wouldnt be able to tell myself.

brakes

you need caliper carriers off a mark 2 golf gti………i had golf 1 carriers on my polo 3 and ATS's would'nt fit & caliper carriers off a mark 2 golf gti solved the problem "ish"…….still needed 3mm spacer until pads wore down a bit

Take the brake pad out ……see what model it fits…. you then know what calipers you have . Post a picture or take to your local motorist shop to find out .

Classics bolt straight on standard MK1 GTi hubs ………

Is it a late model cabrio ?  My Caddy Sport ('92 - same brakes as a late cabrio at the front), seems to be a bit 'fussy' when it comes to wheels, and I have had to use 3mm spacers on a couple of sets of aftermarket alloys I've had on it. Never had a problem with VAG alloys though. Not sure, but the calipers may be a different make than 80's Gti hatches (ie, ATE vs Girling or something). The 'bar' on the front of the caliper (that follows the curve of the disk), seems to stick out a bit more than on my '83 Gti. Do your wheels foul on this bar ? (ie, they won't sit flush against the disk) ???
As for Mk2 carriers - they shouldn't fit a Mk1 hub as the hole spacing is wider apart than on a Mk1 (?). This is why the 256mm 16V Golf front brakes won't go on a Mk1 without the Audi carriers.
I'd be tempted to get some spacers. Hubcentric type are best (built in spigot rings for locating the wheels), but these seem to be a minimum of 15mm wide. You can get away with 3mm regular spacers and use std bolts if gives enough clearance (at least that's what I've done - others may disagree !!!)
Good luck,
Mark
